Kia EV6 Review
2024 Kia EV6 Review -- Electric Kia Seeks to Own the Road
The 2024 Kia EV6 is surprising in how well it meets contemporary benchmarks for driving range and efficiency. It is even more surprising how well it takes care of the American driver.
This model year signals the return of the most affordable EV6, the Light trim level, and that’s good news for those looking for a budget-friendly way to go electric.
Here’s what you should know about its capability, comforts, and conveniences.
What is the Electric Kia’s Reputation?
While not everyone has heard of the 2024 Kia EV6, the critics seem to agree that this is a very good SUV and an even better electric vehicle. Car and Driver gives it a coveted 10 out of 10. They like the AWD Wind model with its 320 horsepower as a practical choice. Of course, driving enthusiasts are raving about the 576-horsepower EV6 GT.
US News and World Report ranked the 2023 edition at #1 for electric vehicles. Even more impressive, it achieved the #1 ranking for all SUVs with two rows.
This is the third year for the EV6, and it has had time to establish a positive reputation with consumers. It does everything well. Specifically, the electric Kia 2-row SUV has a good driving range, good power output, a fast-charging battery pack, and adjustable regenerative brake settings. Its sleek exterior and interior styling are definitely icing on the cake that is this electric Kia SUV. As PC Magazine writes, this one is a head turner.
What Size is the 2024 Kia EV6?
While affordable electric vehicles tend to be small, this one is sizable. It’s so big that it has the same wheelbase size as the 3 row Telluride. The driver has 42 inches of legroom. The back row passengers enjoy 39 inches of legroom and a flat floor without a middle hump.
The cargo hold is 27.7 cubic feet. If the split-bench is folded, the owner has an area measuring 53.5 cubic feet for gear or boxes. Plus it has a front trunk for small items.
With this much wiggle room and hauling space, the 2024 Kia EV6 establishes its credentials as a true SUV. As engineers designed this smarter ride, they achieved a 51/49 weight distribution which helps with handling and performance.
How Fast Does this EV Charge?
The secret strength of the EV6 lineup is its ability to support 400-volt and 800-volt rapid charging. Typical EVs by other affordable car makers are generally much slower to charge.
With this 800-volt DC fast charger, they can charge overnight in about seven hours with a typical Level Two 240-volt system.
On the go, it can increase its charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes at a fast charging station. If it did not have this 800-volt option, the typical 400-volt charger would need about 73 minutes. That means it can save you about an hour simply because it is already equipped to do so. What is the EV6 Battery Size, Drivetrain and Brake-Regen System?
Light, Wind and GT-Line models have standard rear-wheel drive. This places a single motor on the rear axle, providing the fun and extra push of RWD in the way of a good European sport sedan.
For all models, Kia regenerative braking is fully customizable. Even better, in busy traffic, you can switch to one-pedal driving, allowing the EV to determine how much power is needed for slow-and-go traffic.
When equipped with all-wheel drive, this signals that the set-up includes dual motors. Individual motors control each axle, and they can act together or separately as needed for weather conditions.
While the Electric Kia Light model has a 58kWh battery, all the rest have a 77.4kWh battery pack. Likewise, the Light rear motor is a 125kW unit while the EV6 Wind trim level has a 168 kW electric motor. The exciting EVGT trim combines a 270-kW rear motor and a 160-kW front motor.
What is the EV6 Power Output and Driving Range?
The EV6 Wind RWD is the most popular model for its affordability, power, and driving range. Rear-wheel drive set-up generates 225 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It has an electric range of 310 miles. That driving range is best in class, outdoing rivals by as much as 62 miles. Then there’s the fact that this model earns 117 mpg-equivalent.
You can choose the all-wheel drive, dual-motor powertrain that generates 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque. Wind AWD models offer a range of 282 miles.
The Kia EV6 GT is something of a supercar. It manages to hold onto an EPA estimated driving range of 206 miles. Yet this electric powertrain kicks out 576 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque. In 2023, it was the fastest mass-produced EV, and it will probably retain the title this 2024 model year.
By the way, AWD models can provide Vehicle-to-Load connectivity. This allows owners to use the car to power small appliances and electronics.
Is the Dash Tech as Futuristic as the EV?
In the case of the 2024 Kia EV6, the answer is yes. This dash tech meets every benchmark set by other EV automakers. A pair of 12.3-inch screens form a block behind the steering wheel to the middle of the dash. The digital instrumentation is easy to understand and fun to use, especially since it is customizable. Navigation is complimented by a weather system.
You can use the touchscreen for navigation and entertainment, and it allows you to set up your nighttime charging schedule. Owners can easily get information about the nearest charging stations. In addition, they can do all of this on their smartphone with the Kia Connect App.
Adding to the futuristic feeling, this electric Kia offers an augmented reality version of the popular head up display. This system shows all of the expected information (speed limit, navigation, etc.) but it also has segmented arrows that show you exactly how far the EV6 is from other vehicles.
There are other clever tech touches, such as Kia Pay to take care of parking without having to do anything more than push a button or two. The system provides a memo recorder for work and ambient soundscapes for resting while the vehicle is at a roadside charger.
Engineers tucked the extra USB-C ports in the sides of the front seat backs to make it easy for the second-row passengers to reach them.
What about Style and Features?
There’s an elegance to the EV6 that can be attributed to its combination of classical simplicity, original design elements, and attention to detail. Technology is neatly integrated into the design, ensuring that the screens help the driver without overwhelming them.
In addition to the long list of driver assistance and dash technologies, standard features include dual-zone automatic climate controls and an 8-way power driver’s seat on the RWD Wind.
The AWD Wind trim has the ventilated seats that we all want for our hot Arizona summers. It is dressier with its vegan leather upholstery covering the seats in softness. Other features include a power-adjustable front passenger seat and a hands-free power liftgate. A 14-speaker Meridian audio system provides luxurious sound.
GT models combine cool elements like suede upholstery, ambient light, and sport bucket chairs. A stripe motif and green neon piping add racy accents to the upscale cabin.
Does It Have Enough Automated Driver Aids?
These days a good electric vehicle, or any SUV, must have extensive driver assistance if it is to be considered modern. The new KV6 surely exceeds expectations.
Well-prepared for complex traffic situations, this Kia electric vehicle has an eye on its vulnerable sides. These systems include a lane departure warning; lane assist, and blind spot monitor. For parking, there’s front cross traffic alert, a new and somewhat unique feature, as well as rear cross traffic alert.
Almost automated, adaptive cruise control and lane tracing assist can do much of the work for the driver who steers and stays alert for dangers. Even more automated, Highway Driving Assist handles long stretches of interstate and, with available lane change capability, can elect to pass slower cars. Another automated feature is the remote park assist which makes slow maneuvers much easier for the driver.
Additional features include a driver inattention monitor, front parking sensors, rear parking sensors, automatic high beams, and a reverse parking autobrake.
Now that you know more about the 2024 Kia EV6, schedule a test drive to see what it’s like to be behind the wheel of this award-winning, top-ranking electric Kia.
