2023 Kia EV6 GT Review | Excitement Goes Electric

It’s hard to imagine an SUV more fun than the 2023 Kia EV6 GT model. If that surprises you, you aren’t alone. No one expects electric SUVs to be exciting to drive, but this one is.

The EV6 GT is the first production vehicle to achieve this type of performance outside of some high-priced electric trucks. Of course, the overall package has to live up to expectations. Find out about its capability, technology, spaciousness, ownership costs, driving range, and other details in this review.

Horsepower and Handling

The EV6 starts out with a single-motor system. While this creates effective power for daily driving, it would never be accused of being a supercar. Then there’s the 2023 EV6 GT. It actually has the engine output that a supercar needs to succeed.

Instead of a gas engine, this Kia has a powerful front motor and an even more powerful rear motor. It also has a very strong 77.4-kWH battery. These elements work together to create 576 horsepower and 545 pound-feet of torque.

Drivers can take this electric vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. If there were no speed limits, the EV6 GT can go up to 161 miles per hour.

Just to show off how much fun this Kia can be, it has a drift mode. This feature is usually reserved for muscle cars, but it is completely appropriate for this electric SUV. You can discover how fun electric cars can be when you schedule a test drive.

Super Powers

Like any good sports car, the 2023 EV6 GT has some super powers. This includes how it is built. Engineers designed the EV6 with near-perfect weight distribution. Like a good sports car, this SUV weight balance is 51 front and 49 rear. There are many sports cars that can’t get that close to the ultimate 50/50 goal.

Engineers slightly revised the EV6 build for the GT trim level. Specifically they stiffened the chassis, a plus when driving at higher speeds. They also developed lightweight front seats to help reduce curb weight.

Another superpower is its electronically controlled suspension. While some will recognize this as a ride quality feature, others will realize that it is a boon to handling. By dampening how it responds to bumps and dips, the adaptive suspension causes the SUV to behave more as the driver expects. More predictable handling is sure to engender confidence in the driver.

Electronic stability controls are a good invention, but for sports cars, ESC can cause the pace to slow. Yet drivers still need to counter wheelspin and achieve grip across all wheels. That’s why the electronic limited slip differential is another super power. It uses selective braking to even out wheelspin without slowing the sporty pace. Since it is mostly electronic, it adds very little weight, especially when compared to a mechanical differential.

Quicker ratio steering was developed for this fast mover. To make sure it stops, it has larger brakes and special quad-piston calipers. All of these features make handling more predictable, allowing the driver to have more fun.

Battery Charging, Driving Range and Special Tricks

When Kia decided to create the GT edition, they already had covered the difficulty of battery charging. To do this, they created a multi-charging system. The SUV can be charged using either 400 volt or 800 volt DC charging. This makes it fast at home as well as on the go.

The driving range is 206 miles of range, and can quickly be replenished for more miles ahead. It only takes about 18 minutes at a fast charger to bring it back to an 80 percent charge from a 10 percent charge.

This potent battery pack has a few extra tricks that don’t involve driving. If the power goes out at home, the car battery can be used to power a small appliance or lamp. If you are working away from electricity or just enjoying yourself at a campsite, it can power a power tool or a portable stove.

In fact, it can offer 1,900 watts of power. It does this using an Integrated Charging Control Unit. This allows the user to withdraw power for use outside of the car. That’s a pretty neat trick.

Dressed for Excitement

Emphasizing fun, the EV6 GT has special bright green brake calipers. Sport design elements include the altered front and rear fascia, the upgraded spoiler, and 21-inch wheels.

The interior represents a step up as well as a sporty attitude. The seats are covered in a handsome suede-trimmed upholstery with green piping. Upper dash decor has a striped motif. Other trim elements include neon green dashboard accents.

Too Big to Be a Sports Car

While this SUV is geared in every way to drive like a sports car for its lucky owner, this is still a family-sized ride with the features specifications and technologies to prove it. Adults can easily fit in the rear seats with its flat floor. Legroom is 42 inches up front and 39 inches on the second row.

Drivers can take it easy in a 10-way power-adjustable chair. On the dashboard, a 12-inch digital display behind the steering wheel is matched to a 12-inch touchscreen placed center-left.

Built-in navigation is ready to help you find your destination and much more. The climate feature can pinpoint the weather in some 25,000 US cities.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are on board, just as today’s buyers would expect. However, the advanced touchscreen system is offering some unique features such as Kia Pay, a memo recorder, and ambient soundscapes.

Measuring 27.7 cubic feet, cargo space is ample for travelers. Plus, it grows to 53.5 cubic feet when seats are folded.

Value and Long Term Costs

Many of today’s electric vehicles are eligible for the federal tax credit. That’s why EV6 buyers should check with their tax preparer. If eligible, the credit is $7,500.

Of course, an EV reduces costs quickly when compared with a gasoline-powered car. The regular EV6 has been shown to reduce fuel costs over five years by $7,250 or even $7,500.

To reward EV6 GT buyers, this Kia comes with 1000 kWH of power over three years at Electrify America stations. That’s quite a savings as well as a convenience for busy drivers.

Another way the EV6 GT can start paying back its owner is by lowering maintenance costs. Electric SUV owners can expect to pay about 25 percent less in upkeep costs. This isn’t because the car is new. It’s because an electric car has far fewer mechanical parts, which means fewer parts to break.

In a last example, Kia ownership costs are generally lower than those of other vehicle owners with few exceptions. This is due to the fact that Kia warranties run so much longer than the average auto warranty. Running for up to five years, instead of three, the Limited warranty watches over much of the vehicle. Running for up to ten years, instead of five, the Powertrain warranty is much more meaningful.

2023 EV6 Lineup

The GT edition is so much fun that you may not need the rest of this information. However, we thought we’d tell you about the other EV6 choices. The other dual-motor powertrain generates 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque. As you can tell, it isn’t a slow-poke. It can handle the 0-60 mph sprint in about 4.5 seconds.

Introduced as 2022 Kia trims, GT-Line and Wind models have a standard single-motor system with an output of 225 horsepower and 258 pound-feet. This one may be the most practical since it has a driving range of 310 miles. Also in the game, the EV6 Light has the horsepower you’d expect on this size SUV and the most affordable pricetag in this bunch.
