New Kia Sorento Review | Kia Sorento SUV Hybrid
The 2022 Kia Sorento builds on the success of the 2021 total reboot. Reviewers are applauding the ever-increasing value of the trims as almost every level receives more technology. The 2022 is a Car and Driver Editors’ Choice for 3 row SUVs.
There's the new X-Line, providing the excitement many drivers crave. All-wheel drive options are now available for the hybrids as well. There are so many price points that shoppers have an excellent chance to find a perfect fit in this wide array of choices. Vital equipment, such as lane keep assist, is standard.
In this extended Kia Sorento and Kia Sorento Hybrid review, you’ll find answers to almost every question about this award-winning midsize SUV. You'll find performance comparisons, vehicle specifications, trim level explanations, price information, and more. This article reports comments from a range of independent reviewers.
2021 KIA SORENTO vs 2022
As the first of its generation, the model year earned 2021 What Car? Car of the Year. Autotrader agreed, naming it one of the Best New Cars for 2021.
Out of 50 SUVs, it earned “Best Redesign” in the Three-Row SUV Category in Parents Magazine Family Cars Awards. The new SUV even made the Top Ten for the World Car of the Year.
The 2022 model offers more trims and more equipment per trim level. When it comes to car rankings, the experts at Kelley Blue Book have given the 2022 model 4.7 stars out 5. They note its modern, well-appointed cabin with generous safety tech and plenty of power.
US News and World Report praises the 2022 midsize SUV for its low price and operating costs, noting that its good value doesn’t mean that it has compromised on performance, comfort or features. Autotrader praises the redesigned midsize SUV for its luxury-level features and fun-to-drive attitude. If you don’t need the big Kia Telluride, this 3 row is the perfect size.
Sorento Price and Value
A budget-friendly price remains, and that’s important because the Sorento has earned Best 3-Row SUV for the Money from US News for five years in a row. These awards rate a new vehicle based on overall quality, value, and 5-year-cost-to-own projections (car insurance, fuel economy, repairs).
Rolling in as the most affordable, the Sorento LX FWD price starts at $29,490. A long list of features helps ensure that the Sorento drives away with this prize again and again. The 2022 Kia Sorento Hybrid price starts at $33,990.
J.D. Power ranked this midsize SUV number one in its class in its Vehicle Dependability Study™. In this crowded class, this designation is solid evidence of vehicle reliability. Backing that up with best-in-class warranties, the general package is covered for up to five years and the powertrain for up to ten years. Most rivals have three-year limited and five-year powertrain coverage.
Furthermore, the long warranty may be transferred in certain instances to the next buyer. This enhances the vehicle’s resale values. The Sorento is made in the Kia West Point, Georgia, plant.
2022 Trim Levels and Dash Tech
Increasing the number of trims from 5 to 7, two new X-Line AWD trims add a rugged off-road attitude to the line-up. This makes the exciting X-Line more affordable.
The standard edition has an 8-inch touch screen with Android Auto and Apple Car Play. There are extra USB ports to let more people plug in. Even better, the largest touchscreen with navigation has been added to the affordable S edition for the 2022 model year. This system allows for multi-device streaming.
All models have rear AC vents. You only have to step up to the S trim level to enjoy the benefits of dual-zone automatic climate controls. Likewise, SynTex leatherette and a 10-way power chair are standard on the S through SX trims.
The SX Prestige features a 14-way power chair and leather upholstery. This trim has the ventilated front seats that every Peoria driver wants during our hot summer days. You can also get a navigation-connected adaptive cruise control system on higher trim levels such as the 2022 Kia Sorento Plug in Hybrid SX Prestige.
With appearance enhancements, the X-Line S and X-Line EX trims are all-wheel-drive variants of the S and EX models. Shoppers will love the option of a panoramic sunroof. The SX, SX-P and X-Line SX have this amazing glass roof as a standard.
The Kia Sorento Hybrid EX FWD model is now available with all-wheel drive The PHEW model is making its debut as well. It comes with an electric motor with fuel efficient technology for the ultimate savings. There’s no need to worry about range with the 2022 Kia Sorento Hybrid EX because it has a hybrid gas powertrain to take over.
Size, Seats, and Spaciousness
With seven seats on three rows, the Sorento layout is 2-3-2. There is no extra fee for the third row because it is standard. Clearly aimed at taking care of teens and adults, the second row seats offer a whopping 41.7 inches of legroom.
If you choose the Kia Sorento Hybrid for sale or the standard Turbo, it seats six with a layout of 2-2-2. Second-row captain’s chairs are especially welcoming and comfortable. Either way, you’ll find four LATCH attachments for car seats.
Three-row cargo measurements are 12.6 cubic feet. However, folding the third row allows you to claim 45 cubic feet. That’s more than the Honda CR-V and many other SUVs this size. Behind the front row, there’s 75.5 cubic feet of cargo space. From the EX trim up, the smart power liftgate is standard.
Performance, Capability, and Fuel Economy
Mated with a slick 8-speed automatic, the base engine kicks out 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. With the turbo engine, output increases to 281 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. It has a dual-clutch automatic. Sorento fuel economy is improved by sharp-shifting automatic transmissions and idle stop-and-go technology.
The top tow rating for EX and higher standard trims is 3,500 pounds. Other models tow about 2,000 pounds.
Front wheel drive models are rated at 6.9 inches. X-Line models and other AWD models can claim 8.2 inches of ride height. AWD models are assisted by a center locking differential and a torque vectoring capability.
The 2022 Sorento Hybrid model generates 227 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid raises the 29 mpg highway fuel economy to 35 mpg. The Turbo Hybrid earns 39 mpg in city driving. You can choose the 2022 Kia Sorento plug in hybrid and claim an electric-only commute. For more information, EPA estimates are available for the Sorento and all vehicles on the fuel economy website.
SAFETY FEATURES
A defense against collisions starts with keeping the driver aware of surroundings and conditions. To help parents, systems include a Safe Exit Assist and a Rear Seat Occupancy Alert
The Sorento’s basic package includes all of the most important warnings such as the Driver Attention Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Leading Vehicle Departure Alert, blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert. It also includes an Intelligent speed limit assist, an FCA camera-type forward collision avoidance assist, a lane departure warning and a lane follow assist.
If you want more, you can get adaptive cruise control capability and active help with parking. The blind spot system adds collision avoidance. The forward collision alert system has a more advanced capability that includes junction assist.
You can have regular Smart Cruise Control with its stop-and-go capability or go for the Navigation Based Smart Cruise Control . Even more automated, there are several versions of Highway Driving Assist. For better parking there are parking collision avoidance assists and a surround view monitor.
Interior and Exterior Color Choices
Here’s what you should know about the Kia Sorento color choices. There are as many as nine exterior options, depending on the Sorento trim level and/or powertrain you select. Interior colors include black on all trims, gray on S and most higher trims, Ebony black on EX trims, and rust or black on the X-Line SX Prestige.
If your personality likes to keep things cool, there’s Ebony Black, Everlasting Silver, Sparkling Silver, Glacial White Pearl, Wolf Gray or Gravity Gray. If you like things spicy hot, you’ve got choices like Sapphire Blue, Aruba Green, and a tint coat of gorgeous Passion Red.
You’ll find all of the Sorento choices, colors, and powertrains at Peoria Kia. Stop by for a test drive. We’re open seven days a week.
