New Kia EV6 Review | Kia Electric Crossover
The 2022 Kia EV6 is here to challenge other electric vehicles. The electric crossover has excellent performance, handling, and driving range. Plus, as Kia often does, the brand has managed to put together a competitive vehicle package.
The Kia EV6 price undercuts other brands from Ford to Tesla. Furthermore, Kia’s first EV earns praise from Kelley Blue Book, Autoweek, and the Verge. They use descriptions such as ‘sleek and smart’, ‘worry-free’, ‘downright outstanding’, and ‘simply the best’.
This new Kia EV6 review is meant to give you all of the details that a shopper might need when deciding to test drive. We hope you’ll scroll through to find answers to your questions about size, spaciousness, trim levels, horsepower, and unique features.
Exterior Styling and Build
EV6 Kia engineers built this sporty electric crossover from the ground up. The exterior has a sports-car like shape with an aggressive front end. Design cues include short overhangs, a unique light bar, and an integrated liftgate spoiler.
The crossover’s long profile and wide stance hint at the nearly perfect forward/rear balance. The weight is distributed so evenly that the front half takes 49 percent of the weight while the rear takes 51 percent. Battery packs are distributed at the front and rear axles.
The vehicle’s distinctive design helps set it apart in the growing field of EVs. The sporty GT Line has an even more aggressive appearance. When you test drive, you’ll want to check out how the door handles stay flush to the door until they pop out when the driver approaches with the Smart Key.
Kia EV6 Size and Specifications
If the EV6 looks more spacious inside than one expects, that’s because it is bigger in every way that matters to passengers. While the crossover has the curb footprint of the BMW 3 Series, it has the wheelbase length of a Kia Telluride.
With 103 cubic feet of passenger volume, this is a family-sized electric vehicle. The front seats have 42 inches of legroom while the rear seats have 39 inches of legroom. The second row benefits from a truly flat floor. Without a hump, all three rooms have more wiggle room.
The front-row seat backs have been sculpted which also adds to the knee room for backseat passengers. Frankly, there are many gas-powered crossovers that don’t have this much space. If you look at rival 2022 Volkswagen iD.4, you’ll find less space for about the same price as the large EV6.
The 27.7-cubic foot hold is the right size for travel use by a family of four or five. It can grow to 53.5 cubic feet if the split-bench second row is folded flat. Unlike some EVs, the Kia has a small front trunk as well.
Interior Style, Trim Levels and Features
The EV6 trim levels include the Light, Wind, and GT Line editions. In all of them, you can expect an ergonomic cockpit and the high seating position you expect from an SUV. The floating center console and its high tech screens make it clear that this is an extremely modern ride.
Material quality is excellent at all levels. You’d never guess that Kia designers have endeavored to use recycled materials in more aspects, such as the standard upholstery.
At the Light trim level, the value package includes a power-adjustable driver’s chair and a wireless charger. Kia’s adaptive cruise control is standard.
A rich leatherette covers the seats in the EV6 Wind trim. Area drivers will really love this trim for its ventilated seats. Utility features include the power tailgate and the external power port. For music, nothing beats the sound from a 14-speaker Meridian audio system.
The GT Line also wears its own special vegan leather upholstery. This sporty ride has a flat-bottom steering wheel and a sunroof. Best of all, it has a 360-degree camera system to show you everything around the 2022 Kia EV6.
Dash Technology
A single curved panel plays host to dual screens. The first is a digital instrument display behind the steering wheel. The second is the large touchscreen with navigation.
Of course, it offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to keep you connected to more apps. You also have access to a weather system that covers some 25,000 cities across the US.
A first for most vehicles, Kia is offering ambient soundscapes as part of its touchscreen system. Another unique feature is a memo recorder that may be useful for work or just for making to-do lists and grocery lists. The EV6 also features Kia Pay, a new secure way to pay from your car.
The automatic air conditioning system has capacitive buttons and knobs. This makes it quick to learn and easy to control without scrolling through touch screen menus.
Range
When discussing electric cars, the question is always “what’s the range?” The charge for the top RWD model lasts up to 310 miles. The regular RWD models claim 232 miles of range. In between, 274 miles of range can be expected when all-wheel drive is added.
Recognizing the value of an old-fashioned gas gauge, the digitized instrumentation makes sure the driver is aware of the estimated range. In other words, you’ll always know when it’s time to plug in.
The 2022 Kia EV6 Wind and GT editions upgrade the 400-volt system to an 800-volt unit. This is the type of system currently found only on luxury brands. With either system, full battery charging is fast and can easily be done overnight.
With the 800-volt system, however, it can restore its range in just 18 minutes. Specifically, a Wind or GT model can go from 10- to 80-percent range using a DC fast charging station.
Performance and Handling
The electric powertrain produces 258 lb-ft of torque, which is more than ample for quick acceleration and passing. With rear wheel drive, there’s one electric motor for the back wheels. The Light system produces 167 horsepower while the larger battery produces 225 horsepower.
With the Wind AWD trim level, the powertrain has dual motors and a bigger capacity battery pack. The output is 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque. This increases the highway sprint time from 7 to 5 seconds.
Handling is better thanks to well-weighted steering and a specialized static suspension. While the driver enjoys an agile, sporty response, the passengers enjoy an overall smooth ride quality. Regenerative braking has settings to allow you to claim more braking power in settings where you feel you might need it.
When the driver wants to change the routine, there is a full-throttle Sport mode. To save power, the driver can switch from the default Normal setting to the range-saving Eco mode. If there’s snow, the All-wheel drive EV6 models have a special mode to cope with that.
Advanced Safety Features and Driver Assistance
When you purchase the 2022 Kia EV6, you are getting the best modern driver assistance. For safety, there’s a forward collision warning, an automatic braking system, and a pedestrian watch. To reduce dangers from the side, there is a lane keeping function and a blind spot monitor. When you use your blinker, the crossover can send live footage to your dash screen to show what is in your blind spot.
The GT Line has Kia’s futuristic head up display. It also adds the navigation-system to the adaptive cruise control for better automatic driving.
Parking Features
The standard review camera is complemented by a rearview monitor that watches for traffic from the sides. The surround view camera system makes it even easier to maneuver safely in tight spaces.
Kia has a unique Remote Smart Parking Assist. This is something you won’t find on many rivals, even modern EVs. With keyfob in hand, the driver can stand to the side and get the vehicle into a parking spot or back it out of one.
A last-mile navigation feature can switch from driving to walking directions in the last mile of the drive. This can help you choose the best place to park.
2022 EV6 Prices
The 2022 Kia EV6 is eligible for the entire $7500 electric federal tax credit. It is already affordable with a starting MSRP of $40,900.
That’s $2,000 less than the average Ford Mustang Mach-E and about $19,000 less than a typical Tesla Model Y. For that matter, you can save about $4,000 by choosing the top-trim Kia EV6 GT Line over the Tesla.
Sweetening the already sweet deal, 1,000 kWh of complimentary charging comes with a Kia EV6 purchase. According to Electrify America where Kias can use the charging credits, that amounts to about 3,500 miles of travel. If you measure that by $4 gas prices, a car earning 30 miles per gallon combined would need about $466 worth of gas for that same 3500 miles.
Luxury Class Comparisons
If you are measuring the EV6 against a Tesla, you may be thinking that you want a luxury car fo the cost of your EV. Rest assured, this Kia has an upmarket cabin from the start. Furthermore, as CNET has noted, the Tesla Y actually forces buyers to accept a lower quality cabin despite its much higher price tag.
You would have to turn to Jaguar to get the 14-speaker surround system by Meridian. You would have to go to Mercedes Benz to find a head-up display with large-arrow navigation. Likewise, the glare-free glass on the curved dash tech screen is comparable only to Mercedes. In a last example, you’d have to choose the Porsche Taycan if you wanted the 800-volt capability, standard on the top EV6 trims.
Kia EV Exclusive Technologies
V2L is vehicle-to-load capability, and its part of what you get when you choose the EV6. You simply plug in an adapter to your charge port. There is a discharge limit to keep you from depleting the battery.
During a blackout, the V2L can be used to power appliances and keep lamps on. It’s helpful at a picnic or campsite.
Kia’s unique adaptive cruise control is another EV6 exclusive. This system uses the navigation system to make the best decisions and to make them sooner than a normal system could.
Just for fun, there’s an engine sound system. You can choose Stylish, Dynamic or Cyber sounds. Also, you can choose whether or not to tie the sound to your car’s speed.
